Topographic waves
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009694
Atmospheric waves generated when airflow encounters changes in terrain elevation, such as mountains or hills. These waves can propagate vertically and horizontally, influencing weather patterns and cloud formation downwind of the topography. They are a form of internal gravity wave, with their characteristics dependent on atmospheric stability and wind speed.
