Kirchhoff vortex

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006786

A specific solution of the two-dimensional Euler equations describing a patch of uniform vorticity with an elliptical boundary, embedded within a larger irrotational flow. This elliptical vortex patch rotates at a constant angular velocity without changing its shape. The model is used in theoretical meteorology to approximate the behavior of coherent structures like atmospheric vortices and ocean eddies.
