Autoconvection

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003716

A process where a parcel of air becomes unstable and rises spontaneously due to its own buoyancy, without external forcing. This occurs when the lapse rate of the atmosphere exceeds the dry adiabatic lapse rate, leading to vigorous vertical mixing. It is a mechanism for vertical heat and moisture transport in the atmosphere.
