Backlash
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003769
The mechanical clearance or play between interlocking parts of a mechanism, such as the gears in an anemometer or the linkage in a barograph. This slack can cause a lag or error in the instrument's response when the direction of motion reverses, affecting the accuracy and precision of meteorological measurements. The magnitude of the error introduced by backlash is a specification considered in the design and calibration of mechanical weather instruments.
