A raised area of land along the side of a river, lake, or ocean, or a submerged elevation of the seafloor. In meteorology, it can refer to a mass of clouds or fog that appears as a distinct, often elongated, formation. A fog bank, for example, is a dense, localized area of fog that can significantly reduce visibility.
In hydrologic terms, the margins of a channel. Banks are called right or left as viewed facing in the direction of the flow.
