Billow cirrus clouds
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003907
High-level clouds characterized by wave-like or ripple patterns, often appearing as parallel bands or rolls. These formations are indicative of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, which occurs when there is a strong vertical shear in wind speed across a stable atmospheric layer. They are a type of cirrus cloud, composed primarily of ice crystals.
