Transverse cirrus banding
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009774
Bands of cirrus clouds that are oriented perpendicular to the direction of the upper-level wind flow. These bands often indicate the presence of atmospheric waves or shear instability in the upper troposphere. Their appearance can sometimes precede changes in weather patterns, such as the approach of a frontal system.
