Cirrus uncinus

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004315

A species of cirrus cloud characterized by comma-shaped or hook-shaped filaments, often with a tuft or 'head' at one end and a trailing 'tail' of ice crystals. These clouds are composed of ice crystals and indicate strong wind shear at high altitudes. The trailing tails, known as fallstreaks, show the direction of upper-level winds.
