Binary code
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010403
A system for representing data using only two symbols, typically 0 and 1, which correspond to on/off or low/high electrical states. In meteorology, binary formats are used to encode, compress, and transmit vast quantities of observational and model data efficiently. Standardized formats for this purpose include GRIB (Gridded Binary) for numerical weather prediction output and BUFR (Binary Universal Form for the Representation of meteorological data) for observations.
