British thermal unit

A unit of heat energy in the imperial system, representing the quantity of thermal energy needed to increase the temperature of one pound of liquid water by one degree Fahrenheit. The British thermal unit (B.T.U.) is defined at the specific temperature where water has its greatest density, which is approximately 39 degrees Fahrenheit. One B.T.U. is equivalent to about 1,055 joules.
