A unit of energy defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius at standard atmospheric pressure. In meteorology, it is used to quantify heat transfer processes within the atmosphere and oceans. The SI unit for energy is the joule, with one calorie approximately equal to 4.184 joules.
