Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004116
A region of persistent high atmospheric pressure and light, variable winds located near the Tropic of Cancer, also known as the horse latitudes. This area is characterized by descending air, which suppresses cloud formation and precipitation, leading to arid conditions. Historically, sailing ships often became becalmed in these regions, causing delays.
