Calm belt
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004115
A region of the Earth's atmosphere characterized by consistently light or absent winds. These belts are typically found near the equator (the doldrums) and at approximately 30 degrees latitude in both hemispheres (the horse latitudes). They are associated with areas of high atmospheric pressure and descending air, which inhibit the formation of strong surface winds.
