British thermal unit

A traditional unit of heat energy, abbreviated as Btu, defined as the quantity of heat needed to change the temperature of one pound of liquid water by one degree Fahrenheit at a constant pressure of one atmosphere. It is used to specify the energy content of fuels and the heating or cooling capacity of equipment. One Btu is equivalent to approximately 1,055 joules, the corresponding unit in the International System of Units (SI).
