Buran

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004092

A strong, cold northeasterly wind that blows across the steppes of Siberia and Central Asia, particularly in winter. It is associated with blizzards, carrying large quantities of drifting or falling snow, which leads to low visibility and dangerously low wind chill temperatures. When the wind occurs without snow, it is referred to as a 'black buran' due to the dust and soil it transports.
