Chill hour

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004273

A unit of measure used in agriculture to quantify the cumulative exposure of a dormant plant to cold temperatures required for it to break dormancy and flower properly. One chill hour is counted for each hour the temperature is below a certain threshold but above freezing, with the effective range being approximately 0 to 7 degrees Celsius (32 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit). Different fruit and nut trees have specific chill hour requirements that must be met for successful fruit production.
