Circumhorizontal arc

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004310

A bright, rainbow-colored halo phenomenon that appears as a large, iridescent band parallel to the horizon, located well below the sun. It forms when sunlight refracts through plate-like ice crystals in high-level cirrus clouds, requiring the sun to be at least 58 degrees above the horizon. This optical display is one of the most colorful and extensive of all ice crystal halos.
