Cone of escape

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004588

The range of angles within which an upward-traveling photon can escape from a scattering or absorbing medium without further interaction. This concept is relevant in radiative transfer, particularly when considering the escape of radiation from planetary atmospheres. The size of the cone depends on the optical depth and scattering properties of the medium.
