Escape velocity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005469
The minimum speed an object needs to achieve to break free from the gravitational pull of a celestial body, such as Earth, without further propulsion. For atmospheric gases, if a molecule's thermal velocity exceeds the escape velocity, it can leave the planet's atmosphere and be lost to space. Earth's escape velocity at the surface is approximately 11.2 kilometers per second.
