Cutoff high
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004819
A high-pressure system that has become detached or isolated from the main belt of westerlies, often moving slowly or becoming stationary. This isolation occurs when a ridge of high pressure amplifies and then pinches off, leading to a blocking pattern in the atmospheric flow. Cutoff highs can cause prolonged periods of stable, fair weather in the affected region.
