Blocking

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003951

A large-scale atmospheric circulation pattern characterized by a persistent, quasi-stationary high-pressure system that effectively 'blocks' the normal west-to-east progression of weather systems. This phenomenon can lead to prolonged periods of unusual weather, such as extended heatwaves, cold spells, or droughts, in regions affected by the block. Blocking highs can persist for several days to weeks.
