Grosswetterlage

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006081

A large-scale, quasi-stationary atmospheric circulation pattern that dominates the weather over a broad geographical region, such as central Europe, for a period of several days to a week. These patterns are characterized by the positions of major pressure systems like highs and lows, which determine the general flow and type of air mass affecting the area. The classification system includes dozens of distinct types, such as West cyclonic (WZ) or High over Central Europe (HM), used for synoptic climatology and medium-range forecasting.
