Blocking high

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003952

A large, quasi-stationary high-pressure system that disrupts the typical zonal flow of the westerlies, diverting or 'blocking' the movement of other weather systems. These systems are characterized by strong anticyclonic circulation and can persist for extended periods, leading to prolonged periods of stable weather in the region of the high. They often result in downstream areas experiencing persistent cold or warm anomalies.
