Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004844

The average value of a meteorological variable, such as temperature or pressure, over a continuous 24-hour period. For temperature, it is calculated by averaging the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded during that day, or by averaging 24 hourly measurements. The World Meteorological Organization recommends using the average of 24 hourly observations for climatological purposes, though the max/min average remains in wide use.
