Dead water

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004876

A phenomenon occurring in stratified waters where a ship's propulsion energy is dissipated by internal waves generated at the interface between layers of different densities. This results in a noticeable reduction in forward speed despite full engine power. It is most commonly observed in fjords or other areas with a distinct freshwater layer overlying denser saltwater.
