Saltwater intrusion

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008639

The encroachment of saline water into a body of fresh water, particularly in coastal aquifers and estuaries. This process occurs when the pressure of the freshwater column is insufficient to hold back the denser, adjacent saltwater, a condition exacerbated by groundwater extraction or sea-level rise. The Ghyben-Herzberg relation approximates the depth of the freshwater-saltwater interface in an unconfined coastal aquifer.
