Water that contains minimal concentrations of dissolved salts and other mineral compounds, distinguishing it from brackish or saltwater. It originates from precipitation and is found in rivers, lakes, glaciers, and groundwater. The total dissolved solids (TDS) content in freshwater is generally less than 1,000 milligrams per liter.
