Seawater intrusion
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008731
The landward migration of seawater into coastal freshwater systems, including surface water bodies and subterranean aquifers. It results from a disruption of the natural hydraulic balance, such as from excessive groundwater pumping, which lowers the freshwater table and allows denser seawater to advance. Storm surges associated with hurricanes and other coastal storms can cause acute episodes of seawater intrusion over large areas.
