Sea level rise
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008717
An increase in the average height of the ocean surface over time, primarily driven by thermal expansion of seawater and the melting of glaciers and ice sheets. This phenomenon leads to coastal inundation, erosion, and increased frequency of storm surges. Global mean sea level has risen by approximately 3.4 millimeters per year since the early 1990s.
