Dead glacier

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004875

A body of ice that has become detached from an active glacier and is no longer flowing or accumulating new snow. This stagnant ice mass melts in place, contributing to local runoff and forming features like kettle lakes as it decays. A dead glacier is distinguished from an active one by its lack of movement, which can be confirmed through repeated surveys of surface features.
