Deliquescence

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004912

The process by which a solid substance absorbs moisture from the atmosphere until it dissolves in the absorbed water and forms a solution. This phenomenon occurs when the vapor pressure of the saturated solution formed is less than the partial pressure of water vapor in the surrounding air. Certain atmospheric aerosols, such as sea salt particles, exhibit deliquescent behavior, growing significantly in size at high relative humidities.
