Descending node
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004941
The point in a satellite's orbit where it crosses the Earth's equatorial plane while traveling from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere. The location and timing of this crossing are fundamental parameters for tracking the satellite and scheduling data acquisition. For sun-synchronous satellites, the local solar time of the descending node is nearly constant, which is a key feature for consistent Earth observation.
