A localized, vertically oriented current of air within the atmosphere, particularly associated with convective clouds like cumulonimbus. An updraft is a current of rising air that feeds moisture into a storm, while a downdraft is a current of sinking, cooler air that produces outflow and gust fronts. Strong updrafts in supercells can have speeds exceeding 45 meters per second.
