An abbreviation for facsimile, referring to both the method and the equipment used for transmitting and receiving graphical documents, such as weather charts, over telecommunication networks. This technology converts images into electrical signals for transmission and then reconstructs them at the receiving end. Although largely superseded by digital methods, it was once standard for weather data dissemination.
