First-year ice

Sea ice that has grown over a single winter season and has not yet survived a summer melt. It is typically less than 2 meters thick and is characterized by a relatively smooth surface compared to multiyear ice. This type of ice is common in seasonal ice zones and is more susceptible to melting and fracturing than older, thicker ice.
