Multiyear ice
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007463
Sea ice that has survived at least one summer melt season, making it thicker and less saline than first-year ice. As it ages, brine drains out, increasing its strength and turning it into a source of freshwater upon melting. Multiyear ice can reach thicknesses of 3 meters or more, whereas first-year ice is typically less than 2 meters thick.
