Biennial ice

Sea ice that has survived one melt season and is in its second year of growth. It is thicker and stronger than first-year ice, having undergone a summer of ablation and subsequent refreezing. This type of ice is typically found in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, exhibiting greater structural integrity than newly formed ice.
