Folding

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005694

A process in atmospheric dynamics where layers of air with different properties are stretched and convoluted, leading to complex mixing and transport of atmospheric constituents. This often occurs in regions of strong shear or turbulence, such as near fronts or in the vicinity of jet streams. Folding can rapidly transport stratospheric air into the troposphere.
