The portion of a floating object, such as an ice floe or a ship, that extends above the water line. For sea ice, it is the vertical distance from the water surface to the top of the ice. Freeboard measurements are used to estimate the total thickness of sea ice, which is a key parameter for climate monitoring and navigation.
