G-region

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010523

A historical designation for a hypothesized layer of ionization in the ionosphere situated above the F region, at altitudes exceeding 400 kilometers. Early radio observations suggested its transient existence, but it is not considered a permanent or distinct feature in modern models of the ionosphere. Unlike the D, E, and F regions, the G-region is not a standard part of ionospheric nomenclature today.
