Garúa

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005872

A dense, drizzling fog or mist that forms along the arid coastal regions of Peru, Ecuador, and northern Chile, particularly during the winter months. This weather phenomenon is produced by a stable marine layer of stratus clouds that moves inland from the cool waters of the Pacific Ocean, driven by the Humboldt Current. While the garúa produces very little measurable precipitation, it provides sufficient moisture to sustain unique fog-dependent ecosystems known as lomas.
