Great circle

A circle on the surface of a sphere whose plane passes through the center of the sphere. The equator and all lines of longitude are great circles on Earth. The shortest distance between two points on a sphere lies along the arc of a great circle, which is relevant for long-distance atmospheric transport and flight planning.
