Heliostat
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006218
A device with one or more mirrors that automatically tracks the sun's apparent motion across the sky, reflecting sunlight onto a fixed target. The mirrors, controlled by a computer, adjust their orientation to compensate for the Earth's rotation, keeping the reflected beam stationary. In atmospheric science, heliostats are used to direct a stable, concentrated beam of sunlight for experiments such as solar simulation or the calibration of radiometric instruments.
