Hydrostatic balance
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006352
A state of equilibrium in the atmosphere where the upward pressure gradient force is precisely balanced by the downward force of gravity. This balance dictates the vertical distribution of pressure and density in a fluid at rest or in steady vertical motion. It is a core principle for understanding atmospheric structure and is used in calculating geopotential height from pressure measurements.
