Ice prisms

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006431

A form of precipitation consisting of unbranched, columnar ice crystals in the shape of needles, columns, or plates. These crystals are so small they seem to float in the air and are visible mainly by the light they reflect, creating a phenomenon called diamond dust. They form at very low temperatures in a stable atmosphere and are reported in meteorological codes with the identifier IC.
