Ice needle

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006426

A thin, columnar type of ice crystal that forms in very cold, stable air masses, sometimes appearing to fall from a clear sky. These crystals are so small and light they can remain suspended in the air, creating the optical phenomenon known as diamond dust. They are hexagonal in cross-section and grow much longer than they are wide, with lengths reaching several millimeters.
