Ice multiplication
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006425
A process that rapidly increases the number of ice crystals in a cloud far beyond the number of primary ice-nucleating particles present. This occurs through secondary ice production, such as the fragmentation of freezing water drops or the splintering of existing ice crystals upon collision with supercooled droplets. The Hallett-Mossop process, a prominent mechanism, is most effective in a narrow temperature range between -3°C and -8°C.
