Splintering

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009152

A process of secondary ice production where freezing water droplets shatter upon collision with larger ice particles, such as graupel or hailstones, creating numerous small ice fragments. This mechanism rapidly increases the concentration of ice crystals within a cloud, far beyond the number of primary ice-nucleating particles. The process is most active in a narrow temperature range between -3 °C and -8 °C.
