Secondary ice crystal
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008743
An ice crystal that forms through processes other than direct nucleation from supercooled water vapor, typically involving the fragmentation or splintering of existing ice particles. These crystals are produced through mechanisms such as rime splintering, where supercooled droplets freeze onto an ice crystal and shed fragments, or through the breakup of fragile ice crystals during collisions. This process contributes to the rapid multiplication of ice particles in cold clouds, influencing precipitation development.
