Plate crystal

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007975

A type of ice crystal characterized by a flat, hexagonal shape, resembling a thin plate. These crystals form in specific atmospheric temperature ranges, typically between 0°C and -3°C, and again between -8°C and -12°C, in environments with moderate humidity. Their presence in clouds can influence the scattering of light and the formation of optical phenomena like halos.
